Spatially Consistent Drought Hazard Modeling Approach Applied to West Africa

نویسندگان

چکیده

A critical stage in drought risk assessment is the measurement of hazard, probability occurrence a potentially damaging event. The standard approach to assess hazard based on standardized precipitation index (SPI) and intensity classification established according fixed set SPI values. We show that this method does not allow for region-specific hazards, we propose an alternative extreme value theory. model using mixture model, with normal distribution bulk, generalized Pareto upper lower tails. estimation allows us identify threshold below which can be qualified as extreme. quantile function used measure each category droughts calculate (DHI). By construction, DHI varies specific characteristics left tail distribution. To test relevance our approach, estimate over gridded rainfall data covering West Africa, large climatically heterogeneous region. results fits better than calculation. In particular, performs map highlights clusters high located central part region under study.

Sinusoidal Modeling Applied to Spatially Variant Tropospheric Ozone Air Pollution

This paper demonstrates how parsimonious models of sinusoidal functions can be used to fit spatially variant time series in which there is considerable variation of a periodic type. A typical shortcoming of such tools relates to the difficulty in capturing idiosyncratic variation in periodic models. The strategy developed here addresses this deficiency. While previous work has sought to overcom...

A multivariate approach for persistence-based drought prediction: Application to the 2010–2011 East Africa drought

The 2011 East Africa drought caused dire situations across several countries and led to a widespread and costly famine in the region. Numerous dynamic and statistical drought prediction models have been used for providing drought information and/or early warning. The concept of Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP) has been successfully applied to univariate drought indicators (e.g., the Standar...

Hazard Assessment Modeling: An Evolutionary Ensemble Approach

This paper presents a novel and effective genetic algorithm approach for generating computational models for hazard assessment. With millions of proposed chemicals being registered each year, it is impossible to come even remotely close to completing the battery of tests needed for the proper understanding of the toxic effects of these chemicals. Computer models can give quick, cheap, and envir...
